Training on i-Tree data collection
Compass program implements i-Tree Eco (i-Tree) activity, by using free modeling software for tree measurements and other data to estimate ecosystem services and structural characteristics of the urban forest in Dhaka city. The activity is being implemented in partnership with City Corporation, universities, different government agencies, and Civil Society Organizations (e.g., Green Savers) to facilitate strategic management along with policy-making apart from raising awareness among communities about the benefits of trees.
On the i-Tree inventory data collection method, Compass organized a three-day training at Shere-e-Bangla Agricultural University from September 23-25, 2021. The objective of the training was to capitalize the iTree application, plot selection, and tree species identification, and hands-on practice of the latest tree inventory instruments to measure required tree data and use tabs for data inputs. The training was inaugurated by the Compass project lead, Dr. Abu Mostafa Kamal Uddin. Among others Mr. Zaheer Iqbal, Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) of Bangladesh Forest Department, representatives from Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), National Botanical Garden, universities, Green Savers, and project staff were present. Students of Dhaka University, Shere-e-Bangla Agricultural University, North South University, and Bangladesh University of Professionals participated in the training who will be collecting the i-Tree data.
