Country’s First Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) Initiative
Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) has been experiencing forest landscape degradation for decades like other region Chittagong, Sylhet, Cox’s Bazar due to population pressure, land use for commercial needs, settlements and infrastructure, illicit filling, traditional farming system and so on. All these lead to rapid and, often irreversible, changes in land-use mosaics.
Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) component of Compass program has initiated landscape restoration activity in Bandarban Hill District in 2021 and after the three years the project restored 1,075 hectares degraded land with the active participation of the community. With the objectives of enhancing skills on integrated forest landscape management among the local communities in Bandarban, including restoration techniques, alternative livelihoods, and shared governance of mixed-use landscapes as locally led adaptation to address climate change resilience, the project contributed a significant impact to the country’s natural resources conservation effort.
